The project was intended as an opportunity to re-explore past research topics as they pertain to future research exploration. After surveying the capabilities of augmented reality (AR), I revisited software that I had prior knowledge of and experience using. I learned how to use the software, SketchUp in a new way by implanting an AR technology, SketchFab. The subject of this was a two-year passion project in the making, a design for a campus greenhouse at CCAD. I crafted the architecture of this greenhouse easily and then took on new ways in which to visualize it.
AR allowed potential users of this new space the possibility of seeing this design on-site, connect with it in new ways, and even virtually move around within it. In modeling this greenhouse, I learned about the role geometry plays in AR visualizations. Most importantly, I was able to practice designing hands on, virtual activities to engage stakeholders and therefore stimulate meaningful conversation to further understand their design needs.
The first step to exploring AR consisted of trial runs of the software in my own living room.
A view of the final design placed on site. This AR technology allowed the capability to walk through and imagine the space in new ways which in turn prompted great conversation to help further fuel the project.
